Editorial illustration. Coverage depends on the provider's written terms; global warranty service is not guaranteed.

Which warranty should you choose?

Our recommendation for most buyers is a verified local company warranty with clear hardware coverage and an accessible authorised service route, provided the extra cost fits the budget. A shop warranty can still be a reasonable choice when the saving matters, the retailer is dependable and the written coverage is strong. Decide from the actual terms: a company label alone does not promise quick repairs, and a shop label alone does not tell you how much protection you receive. The useful question is who will accept responsibility if this particular phone develops a fault.

What does company warranty mean in Sri Lanka?

In local phone listings, company warranty commonly describes support backed by a manufacturer or its authorised local distributor or agent. Ask the seller to name that organisation and the service centre that will handle your device. Confirm eligibility with that provider using the exact model and device identifiers before paying. A retailer can help submit a claim, but the warranty provider's terms determine the service offered. Do not assume every company warranty has the same duration, replacement rules or geographic coverage.

  • Get the provider's full name and the warranty period on the invoice or accompanying warranty document.
  • Check whether you can approach an authorised service centre directly or must return through the seller.
  • Confirm the start date and any registration requirements for the actual unit.

What does shop warranty cover?

A shop warranty is a promise from the retailer under its own terms. The shop may repair the phone itself, use another repairer or arrange overseas service. Coverage can range from limited software assistance to specified hardware repairs, so the words one-year warranty are insufficient. For example, Life Mobile publishes separate software, additional hardware and local-agent arrangements with different conditions. That illustrates why you must read the offer attached to your purchase; it does not establish a rule for every Sri Lankan shop or an endorsement of a retailer.

Compare these six things before comparing the price

Put both offers side by side and ask for written answers to the same questions. A longer headline period can be less useful if it excludes the component you most need protected. A nearby shop can be convenient, but convenience is different from confirmed coverage. Likewise, an authorised service route does not guarantee a particular completion date or an immediate replacement.

  • Responsibility: which named business approves and fulfils the claim?
  • Coverage: are manufacturing faults in the display, motherboard, cameras, charging system and battery included, and for how long?
  • Costs: are diagnosis, labour, parts, delivery and overseas shipping included?
  • Repair arrangements: where is the phone repaired, what parts may be used, and what warranty applies after repair?
  • Downtime: what is the estimated turnaround, how are delays handled, and is a loan phone available?
  • Remedy: what happens if repair is unsuccessful or parts are unavailable, and how does the initial defective-device policy differ from later warranty service?

Samsung phone price in Sri Lanka: check the warranty behind the quote

When comparing a Samsung phone price in Sri Lanka, request matched quotes for the same model code, storage, condition and payment method. Then check who provides the advertised company warranty and whether that provider accepts the particular handset for local service. An overseas-market Samsung and a unit supplied through an authorised local channel can have different support arrangements even when their product names match. Verify the service route through Samsung's official support channels rather than relying on a logo, sealed box or a verbal assurance from the seller.

iPhone warranty: be careful with international coverage claims

When comparing an iPhone price in Sri Lanka, ask whether the offer means eligible Apple warranty service, a retailer's own repair promise or a retailer-managed overseas claim. These arrangements are different. Apple's published limited-warranty terms say iPhone service may be restricted to the country where Apple or an authorised distributor originally sold the device. An active coverage record therefore should not be treated as a promise of local service for every imported unit. Confirm acceptance with the intended authorised service provider and establish who pays any shipping charges before buying.

Damage, battery wear and replacement promises

Read exclusions separately from the coverage period. Ask how the policy treats accidental damage, liquid exposure, cosmetic wear, battery deterioration and damage connected to an unauthorised repair. Water resistance is not a promise that liquid damage will be covered. Also separate an early defective-device policy from the longer warranty: a fault does not automatically mean a brand-new replacement or a refund. As one local example, Dialog's published limited warranty allows repair or replacement at its option for qualifying defects. Your purchase needs its own confirmed terms.

TRCSL approval and warranty are separate checks

Do not use TRCSL approval as a substitute for warranty verification. Regulatory checks concern the device and seller's telecommunications requirements; warranty documents explain who handles faults and on what terms. TRCSL provides an IMEI verification process and says phone vendors must display a valid vendor licence. Check the handset's IMEI against the box and receipt, complete the official verification, and independently confirm the warranty provider. Neither a company warranty claim nor a shop warranty label answers all of these questions.

Is the company-warranty premium worth paying?

Subtract the final shop-warranty total from the company-warranty total after matching the phone configuration and payment terms. Ask whether that saving would comfortably cover an unexpected repair and the inconvenience of losing access to your phone. If it is your only work, study or banking device, an accessible and verified service route deserves extra weight. If the shop offers meaningful written hardware protection and you can manage the remaining risk, the cheaper offer may suit you. This guide does not quote live handset prices or prescribe a universal percentage premium: the right choice depends on the actual coverage and your budget.

Your checklist at the counter

Settle unclear terms before payment and keep a copy of the offer as it stood when you bought the phone. Test the handset with the seller and make sure the paperwork identifies the unit you receive. A clear invoice makes both ordinary service and a later dispute easier to explain.

  • Keep an itemised receipt with the seller's details, purchase date, model, storage, condition and IMEI or serial number.
  • Save the warranty provider, coverage dates, exclusions and claim instructions in writing.
  • Record the early-fault reporting deadline and any agreed return or replacement conditions.
  • Check calls, connectivity, cameras, microphones, speakers and charging before accepting the phone.
  • Ask how personal data is handled during service; keep backups and follow the provider's preparation instructions when submitting a claim.

What to do if a warranty claim is refused

Report the fault promptly to the seller and named warranty provider. Supply the receipt, a description of the problem and relevant evidence, and ask for the diagnosis and reason for refusal in writing. Keep job sheets and communications. If the dispute remains unresolved, consult the Consumer Affairs Authority's current complaint guidance promptly about the process and applicable deadlines. The CAA says it can inquire into complaints involving goods that do not conform to warranties or guarantees. A retailer's policy should not be treated as a complete statement of your consumer rights.

A FEW MORE ANSWERS

Before you decide.

Is company warranty always better than shop warranty?

Our preference is verified local company coverage when its terms and service access justify the extra cost. Compare the written protection and provider rather than assuming the label alone makes one offer better.

Does a shop-warranty phone have to be fake or used?

No. Warranty type alone does not establish authenticity, condition or import history. Verify those independently, and require the seller to state whether the device is new, used or refurbished on the invoice.

Does one year of software warranty include hardware repairs?

Do not assume it does. Ask for an explicit list of covered hardware and any additional charges. A software-only promise should not be compared as equivalent to written hardware coverage.

Will company warranty replace a broken screen for free?

Check the cause of the fault and the policy. Accidental breakage and a covered manufacturing defect are different cases. Ask about display coverage and any separately purchased accidental-damage plan before paying.

Can I claim a warranty after the shop closes?

For a verified manufacturer or distributor warranty, ask that provider about direct claims. For protection supplied only by the shop, continued service depends on that business's arrangements; do not assume another retailer or the manufacturer will take over its promise.
